Winners Weekend

What’s the first thing you think about when you hear the word “weekend”?

Is it football, relaxing, partying, or maybe even work?

What I’ve observed is that the people who are absolutely world-class treat weekends differently. In the competitive landscape we are all in now, the advantage goes to the person who’s willing to sacrifice the most.

The person who doesn’t care about status, keeping up with the Joneses, or the latest trends. Think about it—when it’s fall, everyone watches football. When it’s summer, everyone is traveling.

That’s great, and there’s nothing wrong with either of those. But what I’ve realized is that the winners in this game play at their own pace and their own speed. They don’t care about what everyone else is doing. They do what they want, whenever they want, on their own timeline.

So what does this have to do with weekends? Well, it has everything to do with weekends. Let me explain. In America, people use weekends as a time to rest, party, eat, and do whatever they please. But the main priority is to get away from “work.”

So that’s what everyone does.

The problem is that, if you look at the grand scheme of a competitive advantage timeline, weekends may be costing you your future and delaying your goals. Let’s do some quick math:

52 weeks × 2 days = 104 days

Even 4 hours of work per day × 104 days = 416 hours

416 hours × 3 years = 1,248 hours of work over the course of 3 years.

Imagine having 1,000+ hours over your competition. Pretty wild, right?

So what does this all mean? It means that if you stop playing life on everyone else’s terms, timelines, and routines, the path to winning becomes much clearer. I’m not telling you to stop watching football or stop going on vacations, but do it when the time is right, not just because everyone else is doing it.

Personally, I try to put at least 6 hours a day in both Saturday and Sunday for 2 reasons. #1 is that I'm obsessed with my businesses, I love what I do so much. To me, working on Flow Forward Media and Flow Forward Creative is fun. #2 is that I understand, that my competition is wasting time today. I understand that they are relaxing, laying by the pool, on EZ mode. As a fierce competitor, I'm licking my chops when I hear this because I know this is the time for me to hit the gas pedal and take off in this race. I understand the compound effect, I understand how winning works, and I refuse to lose.

The weekends for me start with work and end with work. And yes, I’ll occasionally watch football or go out with my friends, but for the most part, it’s two days where I can outwork and build while my competition sleeps in.

When’s the last time someone asked you, “What are you looking forward to in life? What are your goals?”

Never. All you hear is, “Did you see the score of the football game today?”

For me, I couldn’t care less about a football game. It’s fun to watch, no doubt about it. But when I look at the long-term benefits, its value equals zero. It has no effect on the outcome of my life at all; therefore, I don’t watch it much.

What does have an effect on my life is the work I put in, the decisions I make, the content I create, and ultimately the discipline I have. So I choose to lean into that and obsess over those things.

That is how I win my weekends.
